A gold win for SA

Tinashe Mukarati: It means a lot to me. Living in a country which places much emphasis on race, I think it's amazing that a person of colour has broken a longstanding world record.

With the Olympic Games Rio 2016 making headlines, we asked local community members what Wayde van Niekerk’s gold medal and world record meant to them as South Africans. Here is what they had to say …

Allas du Plooy: The Olympics is just another way to generate false pride in your country. I don’t feel anything for athletic records or medals.

Tshepo Tau: Yes, finally there is a sport I can look forward to and support as a South African when it comes to international tournaments. The results are important and it helps South Africa rank higher in sports.

James Hammerton: I’m proud of him. I’m not a fan of the Olympics but still chuffed that people get to achieve their goals by winning medals and breaking records.

Sita Qupa: Personally it doesn’t mean much to me but it’s a great achievement for him and he has basically made South Africa stand out when it comes to sprint/track running.
