Sports training inspires confidence

SANDTON - Embark Tri, a triathlon training coaching group, is facilitating training sessions in Sandton parks.

Triathlon is a multi-discipline sport that consists of swimming, cycling and running. According to triathlon trainer for Embark Tri, Stewart Mackay, coaching and mentoring beginner athletes gives them the confidence to become athletes.

“The sprint race is where the majority of beginners and new athletes to the sport will enter the exciting world of triathlon,” he said.

“Beginners should not be fooled and think they’re the only newbies out there though – more than 75 percent of the athletes are newbies.”

Triathlons take place both on and off the road. The run can be any combination of road running, trail running or beach sections. The swim is done in open water and people compete in the sea, dams or rivers.

When asked about the preparation of running a marathon, Mackay said, “Completing any endurance event encompasses much more than having a sound race strategy.

“Strategy is vitally important, but without adequate training, good preparation, optimal nutrition and rest, not even the best strategy will get you across the finish line.”

He says the races are fun, challenging and exciting, and Embark assists people in finding the best fit for their racing equipment.

“We provide the athlete with guidance on exactly what equipment they require, including things like which bicycle and bicycle helmets to use, wetsuit thickness for open water, where to get good running shoes, and what types of accessories they will need for the race,” Mackay added.

He uses facilities in and around the greater Sandton district. He tries to get out of high density traffic areas and utilises public parks or tracks for the majority of group sessions such as Innesfree Park and Delta Park. The meeting times and venues vary depending on the event programme being followed, and weekday sessions either start before or after office hours. Their weekend sessions are generally longer and sometimes include venues outside of Sandton.

Embark Sandton offers a group-based approach to triathlon training and coaching, and each of the athletes has direct personal contact with the regional coach.
