‘Sleeping’ taxi driver smashes into truck

The driver was entrapped within the wreckage.

At least sixteen people including the driver have been injured after the taxi they were traveling in crashed with a truck on the N1 South between Rivonia and William Nicol, in Paulshof – north of Johannesburg early on Tuesday.

The taxi’s passengers alleged the driver fell asleep behind the wheel, colliding with the back of a slow moving truck and leaving the 16 passengers, and the driver, with injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

“The driver was entrapped within the wreckage. The “jaws of life” and other rescue tools were used to cut him free from the vehicle, while paramedics from various services worked to stabilise him. Once freed, the driver was transported to a nearby hospital under Advanced Life Support care,” the EMER-G-MED said in a statement.

The passengers were found seated on the side of the highway, having sustained less serious injuries. They were treated at the scene before being transported to various nearby facilities for further management.

The truck’s occupants were uninjured in the crash. JMPD was at the scene to investigate further.
