Jaco du Plessis has been appointed as open golf manager at the Central Gauteng Golf Union (CGGU).

Du Plessis, who has been the golf director at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club, took up the role on 1 September.

“I am particularly excited about being part of the CGGU team as it moves forward in implementing the new operating model where we will build a sustainable foundation for growing the game of golf in Gauteng,” said Du Plessis.

CGGU CEO Paul Elliot said, “We are delighted to have a person of Du Plessis’ calibre, experience and enthusiasm join us as we take the union to new heights.

His background as a golfer and a club director makes him ideal for the exciting era that we are entering.”

Having earned provincial golf colours for North West (under 18) and captained the Western Province under-23 team, he also has a management diploma and has attended both the Rules and Referees schools in South Africa. He has also worked on the European and Sunshine Tours as well as with the SA Golf Association and CGGU on major events such as the International Final Qualifying for the Open Championship.

“I take a simple, no-nonsense approach to my work. While golf clubs have become multi-million rand operations, one should always remember what a club stands for. It is there for the enjoyment of members. So treat visitors like members and members like royalty and a club will in general be a happier place,” said Du Plessis.
