What’s in a name?

ROODEPOORT - Find your roots with the Genealogy Society of South Africa.

What is in a name? Not your first name, but the name of your family. The heritage you bear. That which is deeply rooted in your past and entrenched within your own personal history.

Many people take little heed of their surnames and take no note of where their forefathers came from. Those who do, don’t know where to start looking if they wanted to find out. This is where genealogy research is essential.

The Genealogy Society of South Africa (GSSA) can help with that.

“The GSSA,” said vice-chairman Richard Wolfaardt, “is an enthusiastic group of family researchers.”

“We research and compile more than just simple family registers. We create family registers augmented with the family and cultural history of the time.”

Actual experiences of family groups, especially in remote areas, could be an indication of political, religious and cultural values of that time in history.

“It is history like this that may be completely lost to later generations if not recorded in the family register.”

The GSSA holds monthly meetings at the NG Kerk on Phillips Road in Ontdekkers Park. Interesting talks are given on a broad range of subjects, histories are shared and new foundations for solid friendships are cemented with every new member who joins.

And what better place to know your heritage than under the unique and culturally diverse South African sky?
