The two male suspects aged 34 and 36 arrested on 6 July in Bergbron at Heldeberg Street appeared in Roodepoort Court on 8 July and are out on R1 500 bail each.
They will again appear in court on 21 August for further investigation.
According to Florida Police Station’s media liaison officer Captain Lydia Nobantu Mtila-Dikolomela, the two suspects were caught after the police were alerted about a stolen white VW Polo that was reported at Sophiatown Police Station.
“When police received the information, they managed to find the car in Heldeberg Street in Bergbron. When the suspects saw the police coming, they fled in another black Golf. The police tried to stop them, but the suspects were driving at a high speed. The police gave chase and the [black golf] drove into a ditch. One suspect fled out of the car and escaped through a sewage pipe in the street. Police managed to arrest the two males,” said Mtila-Dikolomela.
She confirmed that two males have been charged.
“The 34-year-old has been charged with reckless driving, possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle and possession of car breaking implements,”she said.
According to her, the 36-year-old suspect was charged for possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle and possession of car breaking implements. She said among the goods found in the black Golf, were various computer boxes, different car keys, remote controls they use to lock and jam cars, quite a number of laptops, immobilisers for different cars, allen keys, screw drivers, sets of house keys, car chargers, laptop chargers, different bank cards, iPads, jumping cables and clothing stores cards.
“Their cellphones have been taken for investigation and they are due to appear in Roodepoort Magistrate Court,” she concluded.
