Two locals show off karate chops to the world

WELTEVREDEN PARK — Two students at a local dojo recently fought their way to the top spot in competitions

Two karate enthusiasts from the Palm Court Karate Centre recently received their National Protea colours and have been doing their dojo proud, competing outside the country.

Michael Azih competed at the second African Youth Games in Botswana and Tyrone Gray took part in the Zone 6 Karate Championships in Zambia. Mario Sequeira, 5th Dan goju ryu karate instructor, said he is more than impressed with the boys’ achievements.

“They have been at the dojo for 10 years now and we are really proud of them. They are both our top competitors and have been training here since they were little boys. We are extremely proud of their achievements” said Sequeira proudly.

According to their instructor, the boys brought home medals from competing in Southern Africa. Gray won his category in kumite and Azih in unison kata.
