Vincent proves dreams come true

Vincent Seng is proving that dreams do come true.

Vincent Seng is proving that dreams do come true. Growing up on a farm in the Free State, Vincent would be seen running to school, from the shops, to the neighbours and from the fields.

“I ran 16 kilometres to and from school every day. I started running professionally in 2000 after my brother, who had seen the potential I had in running. He asked his friend, Lucky Miya who was a professional athlete to help me,” he said.

Vincent was employed by the City as a general worker at the Dobsonville Swimming Pool in 2007 when he moved to Johannesburg after matric.

He started taking part in some of the City’s athletics events, such as the Johannesburg Employee Race and the OR Tambo Games.

“I won all the events I took part in. I’ve lost count of the number of trophies I’ve won over the years. However, there were no cash prizes in some of these races. We were only running for the prestige. The first major trophy I won was the 50 kilometre Loskop Marathon with a R10 000 first prize last month,” said Vincent.

The victory at the Loskop marathon came after close finishes in top races such as the Soweto Marathon, Two Oceans and City-to-City.

“I led the Two Oceans for 48 kilometres but cramped at the 52 kilometre-mark. I had travelled by bus to Cape Town and did not get enough rest. But in the Loskop race, I was in a better mental state. I was, in fact, on my way to breaking the record when my shoe’s sole came off and I had to stop to fix it. It took me about five minutes to lace up again,” said Vincent.

Vincent now works at Region C’s Citizen Relations and Urban Management Department of the City of Johannesburg.

He is currently preparing to take part in the City-to-City, Gauteng and Soweto marathons later in the year.
