Development plans for Ward 84 laid out
Integrated Development Planning meeting held for Ward 84 residents

Residents of Ward 84 were briefed on the planned developments in their areas during the Integrated Development Planning (IDP) meeting on 18 October.
Gert Niemand, councillor for Ward 84 (Discovery, Hamberg, Selwyn, Florida Lake west of Westlake Avenue, Georginia, Roodepoort (West, North and the CBD), Horison, Horizon View, Cresswell Park, Manufacta and Technikon) welcomed everyone present and started the evening’s proceedings with an informative presentation. It explained the IDP process to help everyone understand what an IDP is and how the municipality applies it.

Every five years ward councillors, together with the residents, draw up a plan for developments in their areas. This IDP is submitted to the municipality. It is reviewed annually to make adjustments or changes based on what happened during the year. “This plan is based on submissions by the residents. It is then put together in the required format and submitted to the municipality for approval. If you do not ask for what you need, you won’t receive it, as the municipality does not know what is needed,” said Niemand.
Some of the submissions already received include upgrading and refurbishing parks in the ward, upgrading the old Roodepoort cemetery as well as the one in Horizon View, upgrading the bird sanctuaries and wetlands, upgrading of storm-water systems, resurfacing roads, traffic signal placement, speed humps, establishing public parking spaces (especially at the Home Affairs and Labour Department offices), upgrading sport and recreation facilities, transforming the Roodepoort library, upgrading the Rex Street Clinic as well as Discoverers Hospital and the fire station. Provision is also made for additional housing to be made available.

Niemand also informed the residents that there is an existing precinct plan for upgrading and transforming the Roodepoort CBD. This plan was approved in 2009 but never implemented.
After the meeting, Niemand opened the floor to the residents to participate in a Q&A session.
Niemand concluded, “We will do our best to make our ward beautiful and safe. We appreciate the input from you, the residents, and will work hard to get these plans implemented.”
