Four-way stop needed near complex

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Residents petition for a four-way stop at the intersection of Albert and Haak en Steek streets.

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Residents living on the corner of Albert and Haak en Steek streets are tired of fearing driving out of their complex.

Chairman of the trustees and residents’ committee for the complex, Michael Steyn explained that the complex’s driveway was on a blind corner and vehicles sped along Albert Street, which could lead to accidents.

Steyn said installing traffic lights to allow residents to drive out of the complex safely was not a good idea because Panorama Primary School was further down Albert Street and this would only back traffic up.

However, Steyn has drawn up a petition to have a four-way stop installed at the intersection. The petition currently has 179 signatures.

“Once we reach 200 signatures we will present the petition to the Johannesburg Roads Agency and Ward 89 councillor, Amelia Bester,” said Steyn.

He added that residents of the complex have tried logging the problem on various platforms, including the road agency’s app, but to no avail.

Steyn said there have been many close calls and near accidents, enough to have residents sign the petition for action.

What Steyn and residents really want is for the agency to understand the problem from their perspective and meet with them.

Bertha Peters-Scheepers, spokesperson for the Joburg Roads Agency said, “The agency’s traffic engineers will undertake the required traffic counts to determine whether the intersection warrants the installation of a four-way stop or a traffic signal. Once completed, we will revert back to the community with the findings and chart a way forward. We trust this will be in order and [that it] addresses the community’s concerns. Unfortunately, I cannot give an exact time frame but it will be a couple of weeks.”

In response to this, Steyn said it was not the traffic count but the speeding and blind corner that created the danger.
