West Rand Scouts celebrate all weekend long
Scouts celebrate 101 of organisation in the West Rand

The theme this weekend was 101 as the West Rand Scouts celebrated the birthday of the Scouts Movement founder Robert Baden-Powel. This is the 101st year since the scouting movement started to take route.

The event had important guests from the movement such as RTC Scouts’ Sean Dickens, RTC Cubs’ Rochelle Booyens and District Gauteng Commissioner Dave Osmond. Although the founder’s birthday is on 22 February, these two milestones in the movement were commemorated in style by the West Rand. The celebrations included The 1st Eagle Scouts, Discovery Scout Group, Horison Scouts, Florida Lake Sea Scouts, Protea Ridge and Strubens Valley Scouts. The cubs and scouts camped at the Gilwell Scouting Centre with their leaders and parents. The parents had a potjiekos competition while the cubs were kept busy all weekend with a demonstration by the West Rand K9 Unit, among other.

The weekend was also an opportunity for the scouts to work towards Scout Craft and Interest badges, which included activities such as first aid, observation, camping, survival, physical fitness and canoeing.

“The turnout was amazing. To see the children having so much fun and their parents being involved in the activities is just great. We’ve had loads of fun this entire weekend. The parents had a potjiekos competition and that fed the children for the night too,” said Cubs West Rand regional leader Ian Fell.

The West Rand scout movement was also using the weekend to collect various forms of dog food that will be donated to a worthy cause of their choice.
