Canterbury Prep’s disrupted academic programme to resume after Human Rights Day

HONEYDEW RIDGE – The director added that he visited the school on 17 March and said the protest action had calmed down a bit.

The Canterbury Preparatory School is expected to resume its academic programme after the public holiday.
The school’s academic calendar was disrupted after Plot 16 informal dwellers in Ward 97 took to the streets on 15 March and barricaded the main road leading to the school using rocks and pieces of wood.
The dwellers embarked on the protest after being evicted from the land by the Red Ants on 14 March.
The school decided to send the children back home on 15 March when the protest spiralled out of control.

The school’s director, Kyle Deerans said they decided to take 17 March off and resume again on 22 March.

“After the [staff meeting] we decided that because it’s a school holiday on Monday and a public holiday on Tuesday, that we resume the following Wednesday and take this Friday off,” he said.

Deerans took the decision after being advised by police to halt their school programme.

The protest also left the academy anxious about the schoolchildren’s safety.
The director added that he visited the school on 17 March and said the protest action had calmed down a bit.
Ward 97 councillor Leah Knott confirmed that no violence was reported in the area on that day.

She also assured residents that authorities were on site monitoring the precinct.
