Poxon, a young talent

Talent shines through

Powerlifting prodigy Caitlin Poxon won a gold and a bronze medal when she represented Gauteng at the SA Classic Powerlifting Championships in Potchefstroom last weekend. She won the gold in the U/18 sub-junior division and the bronze in the 19 to 24 years U/63kg junior division.

Caitlin broke four South African sub-junior records during the competition – the bench press single lift (52,5kg), the bench press (52,5kg), the deadlift (122,5kg) and total weight (275kg). She currently holds all the South African U/63kg sub-junior class powerlifting records.

This outstanding performance has resulted in Caitlin being awarded her sub-junior Springbok colours. She has also been selected for the SA Powerlifting team to represent South Africa at the IPF World Classic Powerlifting Championships in Belarus in June, and the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships in September.

Caitlin will be training hard this week at the Eleven Eleven Sports Performance Facility, preparing for her next stop, which will be at the Arnold Classic Powerlifting Championships in Sandton during May.

2017 will be a busy year for young Caitlin, but she not intimidated by the daunting pressure put upon her.

“I’m so happy that the hard work is paying off. There have been lots of sacrifices along the way but it’s a wonderful feeling to see the records tumble. I feel very privileged and grateful to be able to do what I love at such a young age. None of this would be possible without the amazing support system I have around me – a wonderful family, an unbelievable coach in June, and a very accommodating school. Hopefully I can keep inspiring others along the way.”
