Wilro Lions warming up winter

Lions Club members appeal to community to support their winter projects.

Days are becoming shorter and nights longer as winter approaches, and with that in mind, the Lions Club in Wilro Park has launched their Warmer Winter projects to help the less fortunate.

The aim of these projects is to assist those in the community who do not have the means to help them survive the cold winter months. “To kick off the Warmer Winter campaign, we have already started making our Lion’s Snugglers to ensure that as many people as possible will have some form of protection against the winter elements,” said Sandy van Heerden, the District Public Relations Officer.

The Lion’s Snugglers are sleeping bags made from recycled materials such as old newspaper, plastic and tape, making it both warm and waterproof. “When they no longer have room to accommodate homeless, desperate people seeking a place to sleep, shelters distribute them as a temporary measure. Sometimes members of the Lions Clubs find homeless people sleeping on the street and then hand a Snuggler to them,” Sandy said.

But, this will not be the club’s only project this winter. They will also collect blankets and winter clothes (new or secondhand) to distribute to the residents of the Donovan MacDonald Retirement Home in Maraisburg. “We are appealing to the public to donate blankets (big or small) and any winter clothing to enable us to help the older folk. Winter clothing like jerseys and coats are also needed, but don’t forget about hats, gloves, scarves and socks. People will always need socks – I am thinking of doing a sock drive!” she said with a big smile.

Their aim is to have a Christmas in June event, where they will hang all the donated clothing on rails in the hall. “We want to create a shopping experience for the residents, where they can come in, look for the item they need, fit it, and then take it home,” said Sandy.
