EMS hosts fun day at Florida Lake

Fundraising event held in aid of EMS cadet programme

The atmosphere at Florida Lake was festive on Human Rights Day, and filled with sunshine, laughter and the smell of boerewors braai’ing on the fire.

The City of Johannesburg’s (CoJ) Emergency Management Services (EMS) hosted a fundraising event in aid of the junior cadet programme.

This programme focuses on the development of leadership qualities, teamwork and problem-solving skills among our young people (12–18-year-olds). The cadets undergo training that is similar to that of the operational EMS fire-fighters, including drill training, handling fire-fighting equipment, and first aid.

The day’s activities were directed by the fire-fighters from Florida Fire Station and started with a parade. According to the councillor for Ward 71, René Benjamin, a basic first-aid demonstration was given to residents and an obstacle course was also set up. “This course enabled residents to test their skills and experience what fire-fighters go through during their training. They were also allowed to wear fire-fighters’ uniforms,” she said.

Everyone – young and old – was allowed to inspect the fire truck and ambulance that were on display. “It was not only the vehicles that were on display, but also the safety equipment, as well as the Jaws of Life. Residents could examine all of these to their heart’s content, in order to better their understanding of how they work and what they are used for,” René said.

The day was not only supported by residents – numerous councillors, including Carlos da Rocha (Ward 66), Gert Niemand (Ward 84), Caleb Finn (Ward 70) and Amelia Bester (Ward 89), also showed their support and enjoyed the day’s activities immensely.

In order to raise money for the cadet programme, boerewors rolls were on sale. The day’s activities were concluded with teams taking to the water in a Dragon Boat race.
