Update: Online school registrations running smoothly

So far, only minor glitches experienced

The online registration process for learners in Grades 1 and 8 officially opened two days ago, and to date, it appears to be running smoothly.

According to the Gauteng Provincial Government, at about lunch-time yesterday afternoon (3 May) approximately 154 916 applications had already been processed successfully. That is almost half of the expected 350 000 applications for the 2018 academic year. “Reaching this milestone in one-and-a-half days is significant and justifies the shift to online applications. With manual applications, this milestone would only be reached in about three months,” said Oupa Bodibe, the spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE).

The successes achieved so far can mainly be attributed to the modifications and improvements made to the system, including (but not limited to) the establishment of 65 admission centres across Gauteng.

However, a few minor errors on the system were detected, namely:

• Incomplete waiting list numbers

• Parents receiving WAB list numbers, meaning that addresses could not be found

• Isolated cases where the system shows schools far from the home or work address of the parent

However, according to the GDE, all of these have been resolved.and parents will be receiving new SMS alerts containing the complete reference numbers. Parents were assured that technicians are working on the system, 24 hours a day, but if problems are still being experienced, they can send a query to gdeinfo@gauteng.gov.za or call 0800 000 879.

Parents are urged to apply as soon as possible, as the closing date is 12 June. They are also reminded that if they have children in Grades 2 to 6 and 9 to 12, the enrollment process has already started at the schools.
