Magaliesburg will be in the limelight this weekend as mountain-bikers and trail runners line up to participate in two prestigious off-road events, the FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic on Saturday, 3 June, and the FNB Platinum Trail Run on Sunday, 4 June, at the ATKV grounds in Buffelspoort.
The course designer, Harry Schubert, said the Monster MTB Classic is a wonderful opportunity to experience the beauty and drama of one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world.
“The popularity of the event continues to exceed expectations from year to year. The route designers are constantly challenged to ensure that the riders experience the best of what the Monster has to offer. The Magalies Monster (a race over approximately 65km) is one of the toughest and most demanding one-day events in the country. Mountain-bikers taking part in the event for the first time must be well prepared and make sure that they pace themselves. Just a heads-up … the down-hills are as technical as the up-hills.”
Harry added that on Sunday the runners in the Platinum Trail Run will have a bit more time than the cyclists to absorb the unique scenic surroundings of Magaliesburg.
“Running adds a different perspective to the experience of being out in the mountains. The longer 24km distance is regarded as one of the toughest, but most enjoyable trail-running events in the country. The stunning views and scenery from the top of the mountain will make all the exertion worthwhile. Runners must remember to focus on hydration as the day-time temperature can increase during the course of the event. This applies especially to the 24km route.”
The FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic is ideal for all mountain-bikers. Entrants can choose between a 15km Fun Ride, the +/-33km ‘Half Monster’ and the +/-65km ‘Monster’.
Entrants looking for another challenge can sign up for the FNB Platinum Trail Run that will take place at the same venue on the following day. The run has three stunning routes to choose from: a challenging 24km race, a shorter challenge of 12km and a less challenging 8km route.
