31 May is National Save Your Hearing Day.
Our hearing is vital and that is why you should use the opportunity today gives you to familiarise yourself with the various ways to protect your hearing and that of your family, as hearing loss can be prevented.
There are many factors that can result in hearing loss, including:
• Age
• Excessive noise
• Genetics
• Illness
• Neurological disorders
• Certain medications
• Chemicals
• Physical trauma
• Neuro-biological factors
According to estimates, at least half of the cases of hearing impairment and deafness are preventable. There are many effective preventative strategies, including immunisation against H. influenza and S. pneumonia to reduce cases of middle ear infection, and avoiding or protecting against excessive exposure to noise. You should always be aware of hazardous noise and ensure you are wearing proper hearing protection when needed. Further, unborn babies can be protected from the devastating ill-effects of maternal infection by rubella (German measles) if the mother is immunised against the disease before falling pregnant.
