Blanket Angels seeks to empower women into becoming their own bosses

RADIOKOP – Blanket Angels provides women with the skills to start their own business.

Local organisation, Blanket Angels, has come up with a way to eradicate poverty by teaching women from disadvantaged backgrounds to be their own bosses and start their own blanket businesses.

The drive seeks to empower women by teaching them how to cut fabric, using electric scissors, and assist them in designing creative knots along the edges to create blankets.

The organisation makes double layer polar fleece blankets which are marketed to corporate companies for purchase on their winter drives.

“Our aim is for Blanket Angels to be the umbrella under which our chosen people will be assisted in getting off the ground in their blanket-making businesses,” said founder of the organisation, Theresa Wallett.

Along with being an operation director at RMP Engineering Group, she runs the programme with Wendy Nieuwoudt who provides skills and expertise, and Tertia Nel who is head of production.

After sourcing fabric, Nel said they teach the women the production side of a business.

Wallett discussed reasons to support the organisation and said, “[Small] businesses can be supported by big companies buying blankets from them instead of going to buy from retail outlets.

“Blanket drives are an ongoing initiative, so these businesses can work on the orders throughout the year so that stock is available when needed closer to the winter months.”

Wallett said nothing goes to waste after production, as strips of material are donated to animal shelters.
