National Sunglasses Day

Channel your inner cool on #NationalSunglassesDay

27 June is National Sunglasses Day, so whip out your aviators or wayfarers and join in the celebrations.

There is nothing quite as stylish as a pair of shades, and Elton John would agree – he does own more than a thousand pairs after all! The Canadian singer, Corey Hart, only wears his at night. And if you watch The Matrix movie, you can tell the good guys from the bad ones by the shape of their sunnies!

But, wearing sunglasses is more than just a fashion statement; they protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays as well.

Although the origin of National Sunglasses Day is unknown, the history of sunglasses stretches as far back as 14th century China. During this time, judges used to wear glasses made of smoke-coloured quartz to mask their emotions.

Fast forward 600 years, and the modern sunglasses as we know them today, were first marketed on the Atlantic City Boardwalk by the entrepreneur, Sam Foster.

Ever wondered where the phrase to see the world through rose-coloured glasses – which means to view the world in perpetually optimistic, perhaps naïve, and unrealistic way – comes from? The exact origin of the phrase is not known, but some interesting theories do exist, for instance, it is said that early mapmakers used rose petals to clean the lenses of glasses. Not only would the natural oils protect the glass, but it also left a rose coloured stain.

Celebrate today by grabbing your favourite pair of sunglasses, slip them on, and channel your inner cool. And, by wearing them, you will not only look stylish, you will protect your eyes at the same time!
