National Oyster Day

Make a dish using oysters as the main ingredient on #NationalOysterDay

National Oyster Day is observed annually on 5 August, and celebrates the delicious seafood treat that is enjoyed in many parts of the world.

There are more than 100 different species of oysters that are typically named after the body of water in which they are grown. The reason for this is that oysters take on the characteristics of the water in which they live.

Some other interesting oyster facts include:

• The largest oyster-producing body of water in the world is located in Chesapeake Bay on the east coast of the United States.

• Almost two billion pounds (that’s nearly a billion kilograms!) of oysters are consumed annually.

• In the United States, East Coast oysters tend to be smaller, milder and saltier, while those from the West Coast are creamy and sweet

• Only one out of every 10 000 oysters will produce a pearl.

Celebrate today by making or ordering a dish that uses oysters as its main ingredient.
