No excuse for poor attendance

All about the RiverWel Residents' Association annual clean-up.

RiverWel Residents’ Association (RA) chairperson, Kevin Thomson, thanked the dedicated few residents for coming out and participating in their annual cleanup campaign on 13 August.

“We are grateful for the dedication of the few volunteers who came out to help, and also appreciate the presence of Ward 126 councillor David Brand,” Thomson said, after highlighting that over 100 binbags of waste material was collected along the river and greenbelt.

Empty beer bottles, cans, electrical appliances and scrap metal are just some of the items that were collected from the greenbelt by the volunteers.

Thomson appealed to residents to avoid throwing old electrical appliances into the trash as bin collectors strip them down, take out what they see valuable, and then dump the object.

Councillor Brand told the Northsider that it was important to host such events to bring the community together.“It’s about community involvement and bringing people together. We also trying to encourage people to use the park and walk their dogs,” said Brand during the event.

Committee member, Neville Burnett, said there was no excuse for the poor attendance as the event was publicised through various mediums. He said he hoped for a better turnout when the event is held again next year.
