
Despite a noble campaign launched by Mayor Herman Mashaba recently to close-up open manholes, one motorist did not reap the fruits of it yet.

The motorist hit a protruding manhole cover on the corner of Chaucer Avenue and Vermooten Road at about 8 am this morning (21 August). According to a tow truck driver, Tjaart Vermeulen, the cover was protruding about 30cm above the street surface. “Motorists traveling on these streets should take extreme care as their vehicles will definitely suffer serious damaged if they hit the cover,” he warned.

According to Mashaba there were 104 deaths due to open manholes in the past year.
