Licensing station under construction

Construction underway at licensing station

Visitors to the Florida Florida Driver’s Licence and Testing Centre (DLTC) wanting to renew their driver’s licences are urged to be patient while system issues are being addressed.

A frustrated resident took to Facebook recently after an unsuccessful visit to the Florida Driver’s Licence and Testing Centre (DLTC) to renew her driver’s licence.

The post consisted of a photo of a notice in one of the cubicle windows at the DLTC, stating that the office was unable to process driver’s licence renewals because of the installation of new systems as well as upgrades taking place.

This prompted the Record to contact the DLTC manager, Teddy Msimang, to shed some light on this situation. “The centre is currently undergoing construction to ensure we are able to render better services to all. On top of this, the new systems and equipment were installed last week, Wednesday, 23 August. Since the installation, we have been experiencing a few issues, but they are being addressed, ” he said.

According to Msimang, the centre is being overhauled, to make the experience much better for visitors, and the installation of the new systems and equipment forms part of this. “We have seven machines we use when people come to book for their driver’s or learner’s licences, as well as renewals. But, we have only received one scanner, making the execution of our duties quite difficult,” said Msimang.

According to him, the scanner is a very important piece of equipment. “The reason we need more than one scanner is because of the eye tests. With the new system, you only have two chances to complete the eye test, after which you will be failed. And, if you do fail, the system will not allow any of our staff members to do another eye test on the same identity number. This means the applicant needs to visit an optometrist and obtain a certificate which will then be scanned, and only then can the result be changed,” he explained.

Because of this situation, the DLTC is only processing bookings for driver’s and learner’s licences, but not renewals. So, the question remains, “What do I do if I need to renew my driver’s licence?”

Msimang answered this question confidently, “Should you need to do a renewal, you can visit the Roodepoort Town Hall. We have ensured that the manpower there has been increased to help during this time.

We do not want our motorists to panic while driving, knowing their licences have expired.”

He urged visitors to be patient while all the issues are being sorted out, and assured them that the DLTC will be fully operational again by 11 September. “The equipment is provided by a third party, and unfortunately I do not have any control over it. All I ask is for our customers to be patient during this time. We are in the process of modernising the way the DLTC functions, in an attempt to make the process easier and smoother for everyone,” he concluded.
