National Book Week kicked off earlier this week, with the aim of getting individuals of all ages to read more.
The national week is implemented by the South African Book Development Council (SABDC) in partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture, and was initiated in 2010.
This year marks the eighth annual National Book Week, which will take place from 4 to 10 September and will see the SABDC embarking on a nationwide tour of all nine provinces, reaching beyond urban centres and metros.
“We have our own narrative and story to tell, one that has been formed by our diversity and our similarities, our adversities and our achievements. Books are the richest form of storytelling and one of the best ways to let the world know who we are – a way to take Africa to the world and not only bring the world to Africa,” said Elitha van der Sandt, Chief Executive Officer of the SABDC.
Initiatives such as the #BUY_A_BOOK campaign will run at Exclusive Books, Bargain Books and Takealot.com once again. These initiatives request the public to donate books to organisations working with women, men, children, youth and the disabled. Funda Bala, the SABDC mascot, will get all the donated books into the hands of children, youth and adults who do not have books.
According to the SABDC website, reading and literacy are at the heart of personal growth, community development and a thriving nation. Having as few as 20 books in the home has been proved to have a significant impact on motivating children to achieve higher levels of education.
Furthermore, children who read are able to easily transcend the difficulties imposed on them by the low educational levels of their parents, their community’s economics or the political systems of their country.
