Learn to Line Dance from SA’s best

Some of SA's best line dancing practice their steps.

Gertie Dodgen and Leon Nel are two locals who achieved excellent results in Line Dancing at the World Dance Masters in Blackpool last month.

Leon placed second in his category (silver intermediate) and Gertie placed second in the starter gems group. Leon is the instructor of The Rainbow Line Dancers and let the Roodepoort Northsider sit in on his ‘improvers’ class at Wilgeheuwel Retirement Village on 7 September.

Leon taught the class a dance called ‘Skinny Genes’ to the music Skinny Genes by Eliza Doolittle.

Steps:

First set:

Step diagonally forward on right to right diagonal, close left to right

Step diagonally forward on right to right diagonal, tap left next to right

Step diagonally forward on left to left diagonal, close right next to left

Step diagonally forward on left to left diagonal, tap right next to left

Second set:

Step right diagonally back to right diagonal, tap left next to right

Step left diagonally back to left diagonal, close right next to left

Twist both heels to right, twist both heels back to centre, twist both heels to right, twist both heels back to centre

Third set:

Step right to right, cross left behind right, right to right, brush left next to right

Step left to left, cross right behind left, turn quarter left stepping forward on left, brush right forward

Fourth set:

Step, brush, step, brush, walk back (three steps), close

Step forward on right, brush left forward, step forward on left, brush right forward

Walk back – right, left, right, close left next to right

Repeat this routine to the music.

Leon teaches both line dancing and other forms of dancing. He can be contacted for individual lessons but also holds group lessons at Roosevelt Park Bowling Club, Blairgowrie Community Centre, Douglasdale Retirement Village, Featherbrooke Retirement Village and The Village Bryanston Retirement Village.
