To watch, or not to watch – that’s the question

I don’t like reality TV.
That includes programmes such as The Voice SA, Idols, the X-factor and so forth.
Every now and again I catch glimpses while Your Highness (my fiancé), who is an avid supporter and watcher, watches some of the shows. I like to watch the fails – you know, those people who think they can sing but sound more like a cat on heat dancing on a hot corrugated roof – and the rude people, but I think that is more part of the overseas programmes.
Sometimes Facebook posts an exceptional singer or performer and when I have time, I indulge (just a little) on that.
This past weekend, I was invited to see the top five contestants from Season II of The Voice SA, at the Barnyard in Rivonia. Fatman, Josh, Caroline and Grace (I don’t know their surnames. I know, I’m bad) and of course the winner, Craig Lucas, performing in front of a packed venue.
Although Craig has a phenomenal voice, my favourite is Fatman. I think his voice is very versatile and he can sing almost anything, including Gé Korsten’s songs. He is also funny. Josh’s stage presence is top notch, but I didn’t like his voice that much.
And before you ask, no, I didn’t vote for anybody, because, as I said, I don’t like reality TV. I think it might be different being there when they actually shoot the programmes. I am sure there is a different vibe.
Nonetheless, their performances were very well executed and choreographed.
It is clear that South Africa has some good, strong voices out there. However, I don’t know whether Saturday’s performances were enough to make me start watching reality shows. I think not, though.
What do you think? Do you like reality shows? What do you like to watch? Let me know, send your comments to roelienv@caxton.co.za – you might just get published in the paper.
Until next week, take care of one another.
