The councillor for Ward 84, Gert Niemand expressed shock at the deterioration of the Roodepoort Central Business District (CBD) during a recent oversight visit.
“I arranged for a walk-about within the CBD and was joined by the elected steering committee, business owners and residents.
We met at the Roodepoort City Hall, and during this exercise, it became clear that the CBD is in desperate need of service delivery,” said Gert.
He added that the lack of general maintenance in the CBD was shocking. “After walking through almost every street within the CBD we could see storm water drains that were bridged and silted up, drain covers were missing, illegal signage and advertising could be seen on every available surface, power boxes were left open, road markings were faded and illegal dumping was a major problem. The buildings in the CBD are all badly maintained, street hawkers are not controlled and illegal parking is the order of the day. And, the biggest concern is the fact that there are no public toilet facilities available for a CBD as busy as this one,” he said.
The councillor was also not happy with the taxi industry that is not adhering to the rules as taxi operators are simply parking where ever they like and ignoring the allocated holding facilities.
He concluded by saying, “I will ensure that details of all these issues are submitted to the relevant role-players, as I believe the City of Johannesburg has a lot to answer for in terms of basic service delivery that, by the look of things, has not been done for a very long time. It will take serious commitment from all role players to reverse the deterioration of the CBD.”
