Jesse Bristow, a Grade 12 learner at Maragon High School in Ruimsig, competed in the recent 34th South African Computer Programming Olympiad in Cape Town.
The Olympiad consisted of three rounds, and drew 2 348 entrants from 227 schools across all nine provinces to the first round. The second round consisted of 478 participants, selected from the top performers in the previous round. The third and final round consisted of a mere 13 finalists.
Jesse spent two days writing computer programmes to solve six different problems and achieved a perfect score in both the first and second round, ensuring him a place in the final round.
The final round of the Olympiad was hosted at the University of Cape Town (UCT). Although Jesse was not awarded a medal in the final round, his Information Technology (IT) teacher at Maragon, Grant Kenning said, “Being invited to take part in the final round of the Olympiad is a phenomenal achievement and Jesse can be very proud of this accomplishment.”
Jesse said that he enjoyed being able to take part in the Olympiad and the experience was incredible. “I learned so much by attending this competition,” he concluded.
