‘I will not allow the ANC to undo the change achieved in the CoJ’
Various attempts by opposition to undermine residents’ will
“We are committed to building a working Johannesburg with improved opportunities and services for residents. We will not allow the ANC to derail that project.”
These were the words of the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg (CoJ), councillor Herman Mashaba in a recent press release, highlighting the opposition party’s latest tactic to undermine the will of the residents.
“Following the motion of no confidence, they have, in another frivolous court application, challenged our Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for the 2017/ 18 financial year. This is nothing more than another baseless attempt to enrich themselves at the expense of our residents,” the mayor said.
He added that the city’s IDP and budget for 2017/ 18 was passed in May and explained it as follows, “The IDP is the city’s strategic framework for achieving much-needed service delivery within the CoJ, as well as delivering the change demanded by the residents. Johannesburg has the potential to be a city of golden opportunities for all, and the IDP is the roadmap for realising that potential.”
The mayor assured residents that they have every intention of defending the residents against the opposition party’s latest smokescreen for clawing their way back into control of the city.
“Time and time again, the opposition has shown that they will go to any lengths to get back into power, and during the IDP public participation process, they were the ones responsible for the disruptions at the meetings. Despite this, our public participation process was successful,” he said.
He added that more than 8 000 residents have been reached through the recent IDP consultations, compared to the 3 000 under the previous administration.
The CoJ also received more than 1 000 written submissions and more than 2 000 interactions on their social media platforms, demonstrating the citizenry’s desire to get Johannesburg working.
