14th Avenue rock-throwing incident alert

One incident has been reported to the Northsider so far about rock-throwing on the 14th Avenue pedestrian bridge.

The infamous rock-throwing incidents in parts of KwaZulu-Natal have become a growing trend in Roodepoort, according to isolated reports of incidents on the notorious N1 towards the 14th Avenue offramp pedestrian bridge in Constantia Kloof.

This follows a report from a local resident who narrowly escaped with his life and extensive damages to his car after he was allegedly targeted by rock throwers who attacked him on Thursday, 1 March, after midnight.

According to the girlfriend of the traumatised driver, he was travelling home at about 11.45pm when he came across several suspicious people standing on and under the bridge. As he drove ahead, he heard something hit the front of his vehicle.

The girlfriend believes that the brick was meant to distract him, so that he could eventually be hijacked by the perpetrators. “If the brick had landed on top of his car and he’d stopped, I don’t know what would have happened to him,” said the concerned partner, who warned people to be careful when travelling on the N1 towards 14th Avenue. The car had to be taken for repairs as the wheel rim was bent by the impact.

A case has not opened by the motorist.

Previously, the Florida Police issued a warning about 14th Avenue, labelling the route as a hotspot. Motorists were encouraged to be vigilant in the area.
