Extremely large piles of waste and illegal structures were cleaned up by municipal personnel who cleared up areas that had become an eyesore.

This joint clean-up operation, involving the Johannesburg Metro Police Department, Pikitup and social development was held at a problematic site near the junction of Paul Kruger Avenue and Amplifier Street in Wilgeheuwel on 13 April.

Mrubata said four foreign nationals living in shacks were found to be occupying the land. “The foreign nationals were advised to leave the area and move to the place of safety in Florida,” he explained.

He also cited other severe challenges faced by the JMPD in the city currently. “We still have a problem of land invasion and we cannot plan around it. We are also aware that the homeless people behind Pick n Pay on Hendrik Potgieter Road are back but inside the reeds now, and are at least no longer bringing their litter along,” he said.

In a CPF meeting, Sector 3 manager Captain Karen Jacob said that the landowners should start cleaning their own properties. “That land is privately owned and its owners will be issued with notices to start cleaning their property,” she said.
