Make a difference and recycle

Glass recycling has many benefits to mankind as well as to the environment .

Ever wonder what to do with your used glass containers? Residents can now recycle their used glass and make a difference in the environment.

As we approach Environmental Day (5 June), The Glass Recycling Company (TGRC) would like to urge more people to make a difference and look after the environment by recycling glass. Glass recycling has many benefits to mankind as well as to the environment and is an important part of our everyday life.

Did you know that our earth has supported mankind’s growth, health and development from the earliest of times? It is important to remember that if we want the earth to continue supporting us, we need to support it in return.

However, there are only a handful of dates in the calendar when we take the time to celebrate the earth and its resources: Earth Hour in March, Earth Day in April and Environmental Day in June.

Residents are urged to really consider the role they play in ensuring a clean and healthy planet for future generations.

TGRC urges you to start today and help keep the earth cleaner and healthier. Not only does recycling prevent waste from being sent to a waste graveyard or landfill, but it has numerous benefits.

They shared a few of the benefits of recycling glass:

· Saves energy – Making glass from raw materials or for the first time compared to making it from a recycled glass bottle or jar uses more energy.

· Reduces pollution – Glass produced from recycled glass bottles or jars reduces related air pollution by 20 per cent and related water pollution by 50 per cent.

· Saves scarce landfill space – Recycling glass bottles and jars extends the lifespan of landfills.

· Recycling conserves natural resources – For every ton of recycled glass used in the manufacturing of new glass packaging, 1,2 tons of non-renewable natural resources are saved.

· Glass can be recycled over and over again.

TGRC consists of a team dedicated to increasing glass recycling in South Africa. They are passionate about ensuring that every South African realises the value of recycling glass and actively embraces this practice.
