Embattled West Ridge High School is once again in the news for all the wrong reasons.
The Record received two videos of two different incidents that took place at the school recently. In one it can be seen how learners go on the rampage on the school property allegedly demanding that the principal, Sydney Mashige, resign or be removed. Some parents allegedly were so unhappy with the state of affairs at the school that they have moved their children to other schools.

The second video involves a teacher and two allegedly off-duty policemen assaulting a Grade 12 learner. The video shows how chaos erupts as learners scream for it to stop. According to the boy’s mother her son was wearing a cap (which he is not allowed to). The teacher in question took the cap from him but he took it back. The teacher then allegedly slammed the boy against a fence. Two off-duty policemen joined in and at one stage kicked the boy in his private parts. It is not clear why the two policemen were at the school.
The boy has opened a case against the teacher and policemen, and the teacher was charged. According to the mother the two policemen were not. The teacher has laid a counter-charge against the learner.
An employee of the school also alleges that teachers are overworked since Mashige failed to renew 26 employees’ contracts.
The Record is currently awaiting comment from the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE).
