It is alleged that members of the Police have been seen dropping off food for opposition party agents at the Ward 85 by-election, which is taking place today (23 May).
According to a media release received from Michele Clarke, the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) spokesperson for Community Safety in Gauteng, the police vehicle was seen dropping off food parcels for the African National congress (ANC) party agents at the voting station at the Gereformeerde Kerk in Florida Park.
“While crime spirals out of control in Gauteng, police officers are being used as a delivery service, rather than fighting crime.
It is apparent that the ANC is abusing its power by using state resources to further its own ends, and the party must be held accountable for their wrongdoing,” Clarke said.
Gert Niemand, the councillor for Ward 84, said, “I am aware of this incident, but did not witness it myself. I queried it with the relevant people at the voting station in question, and they confirmed that a police van (station unknown), had dropped off some food parcels for the opposition party agents.”
