Fuel price set to rise yet again

The fuel price will be taking a huge step towards R16/l when the newest fuel increase comes into place on 6 June.

The Department of Energy announced last week that the fuel price will once again increase this month, with the new prices set to take effect from 6 June.

According to the department’s spokesperson, Robert Maake, “There are two main reasons for this increase. The first one is the high exchange rate during the period under review when you compare it with the previous period. The other one is the crude oil price, which also increased during the period under review compared to the previous period.”

The increase in the petrol price will be 82c/l, compared to the 49c/l increase that was set in place last month. This will see the price of unleaded 93 octane petrol hit R15,54/l, while unleaded 95 octane’s price will be R15,79/l.

The diesel price will also increase on 6 June, by a staggering 85 to 87c/l, setting the wholesale price for 0,05 per cent diesel at R14,19/l.

While the price of illuminating paraffin is set to increase by 82c/l, the price for liquid petroleum gas (LPG) will increase by 138c/kg.

A number of theories for the price increases, other than the reasons provided by the department, are being tossed around, with some believing they are due to the government’s decision to increase the fuel tax.
