Thirty0three judoka from the KJK Judo Club have qualified to compete at the South African Open Judo Tournament.
The tournament will be taking place from 2 to 7 July at the Madibz Indoor Centre, Missionvale Campus, Port Elizabeth, and there will also be competitors from Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
According to their coach, Sensei Katja Bruwer, the judoka were selected after their excellent performance at the West Rand trials that took place in May. “This tournament is one of the most anticipated events on the judo calendar and more than 1 000 participants are expected,” Katja said.
The tournament will be taking place over six days, and judoka from the ages of nine and up will be competing in individual as well as team competitions for both kata and kumite (fighting). There will also be a Masters category (ages 30 and older) as well as an event for visually impaired judoka.
Katja concluded by saying, “I am confident that all my judoka will do very well at the tournament, and that we will definitely be bringing back some silverware.”
