Witpoortjie boxer makes it three in a row

Phumi will be competing at the SA Championships

When the 20-year-old Phumelele Cele gets into the ring later this year, he will want to ensure that he gets out as a South African champion.

He has been training at the Vikings Boxing Academy for the past four years, and, according to Phillip du Randt, his coach, he has a bright future ahead of him.

“At the previous two years’ Championships, Phumi won silver. He also won the overall first place in the South African Open Boxing League in his weight division. He is a very hard worker, who is always busy training, and I believe that is a big part of his success story. Even the fact that he is busy with his matric this year has not made a difference to his level of dedication, and he has not missed a training session,” said Phillip.

Phumi was crowned as the Gauteng champion after he beat his opponent in the first round of their bout at the Championships, which took place in Alberton, and Phillip said, “ Phumi did not back down when he met a much more experienced boxer in the final. In fact, it only inspired him to work a bit harder. The fight was stopped after the first round, when his opponent had to withdraw after a blow from Phumi injured his eye badly.”

With this win, Phumi qualified for participation in the middleweight category at the SA Championships that will be taking place later this year – for the third consecutive year.

“We wish him all the best and believe that he will be coming back as a SA champ. The boxers and committee members at the Vikings Boxing Academy are supporting him wholeheartedly and our hearts will be with him when he gets into that ring to show everyone that he is a true champion, “ Phillip concluded.
