The accused in the case of the missing four-year-old, Liyaqat ‘Lee’ Mentoor, appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court again today, 27 June.
The 29-year-old Onke Hartin Mashinini stands accused of premeditated murder, defeating the ends of justice, kidnapping and child neglect.
After his bail application was denied, he acquired the services of a private law firm, which indicated that they would like to re-apply for bail, and the previous hearing was postponed in order for them to obtain the transcripts of the bail hearing.
During today’s appearance, Mashinini’s legal representative, Advocate Twala, informed the court that they have been unsuccessful in obtaining the required transcripts and requested that the case be postponed again.
The magistrate, Judge Hawkins, asked the advocate if they had given the company that needs to provide the transcripts, written instructions, to which the advocate replied with a negative.

She then granted another three weeks’ postponement, but advised the legal representatives that they should ensure that written instructions are given, and they should also provide proof of this to the court.
Today’s court proceedings were also closely monitored by advocate Gerrie Nel and his legal team. “The family approached AfriForum’s private prosecuting unit, because they felt the case was not being prioritised by the police. We will be taking on an advisory role, and supporting them through the legal process. Our aim is to see that justice is served,” Nel said.
The case was postponed to 18 July, with Mashinini remaining in custody until then.
