Kids accused of rock-throwing in Welties

As far as Lizelle can recall, the rock was dropped by three young, well-dressed children of about 10 years old. They ran away after causing the incident.

A distressed motorist, Lizelle Eksteen, has asked parents in Weltevreden Park to be mindful of their children who may be playing on the pedestrian bridge which crosses the N1 highway.

This follows a rock-throwing incident which damaged the windscreen of Lizelle’s car at about 5.30pm on Monday, 25 June, while she was travelling on the highway towards North Riding.

As far as Lizelle can recall, the rock was dropped by three young, well-dressed children of approximately 10 years of age. The children ran away after causing the incident.

She told Northsider that she had revisited the scene and spoken to a vendor, who claimed that he saw the children running from the bridge, but thought they were just playing around.

Lizelle was very critical of the children’s behaviour, as this stunt has claimed lives in KwaZulu-Natal. “Besides the damage to my windscreen and the financial loss for me, they put my life in severe danger,” she lashed out.

She has since opened a case at the Honeydew Police Station and is waiting for repairs to be authorised by her insurer. She also asked the homeowners in the area to check their CCTV footage, in case one of their security cameras picked up the incident.

Ward 126 councillor David Brand sympathised with Lizelle. “The incident took her by surprise and she was lucky not lose control of the vehicle,” he said.

Brand said although this was an isolated incident, he had asked Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD) to keep an eye on the bridge, even though the bridge and the road fall under the jurisdiction of Sanral.

He concluded by suggesting that schools in the area should educate their learners about the dangers of rock-throwing.
