JRA plans to work on the conditions of Christiaan de Wet Road

“The road is cracking and it looks like will soon collapse."

According to Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) spokesperson, Bertha Scheepers, the bad condition of Christiaan de Wet Road has been noted by JRA, and will be repaired.

Bertha said that the road has been prioritised for reconstruction in 2020/ 21 subject to the availability of budget, but in the interim it will be maintained for safe mobility by the JRA depot. This follows an article about a concerned motorist, Noreen Beets, who said, “The road is cracking and it looks like it will soon collapse.”

The bad conditions on the road are the aftermath of the oil spill that occurred on 29 January, when an oil tanker truck was travelling on Wilgerood Road and the driver tried to turn right into Christiaan de Wet Road towards Ontdekkers Road. He failed to make the turn, and drove into the ditch alongside the road, and the oil spilled onto the road.

Noreen has lived in Roodepoort since 1998 and she often uses Christiaan de Wet Road to travel to work. “After the accident I have noted that the road keeps on cracking, [and] bearing in mind that Christiaan de Wet Road carries a high amount of traffic on a daily basis, I believe that this problem should be addressed because it’s getting worse by the day,” she said.
