Giving hope to the hopeless

The organisation was established by care-givers after seeing a need within their community.

The Ubuhle Bontle Community Home Based Organisation (CHBO) keeps the children of Matholesville informal settlement off the streets and engages them in a pro-active holiday programme held at the Matholesville Skills Development Centre.

This holiday programme has been running since 2008.

“Every child is a different kind of flower and together they make this world a beautiful garden,” said CHBO Project manager, Nomakos Mbiko. The organisation aims to contribute to the growth and well-being of children.

They have a life-skills programme, sports, indigenous games and they also invite City of Johannesburg officials from different departments to talk to the learners about health issues, substance abuse, problems teenagers face during adolescence, safety and many other issues.

The organisation was established in September 2008 (Reg: 078-534 NPO) by care-givers after seeing a need within their community as people were dying of Aids, tuberculosis, cancer and other chronic illness. Most of them were sick and some died, leaving behind orphaned and vulnerable children, some with single parents who were either terminally ill and unemployed, and some becoming child-headed households.

The organisation caters to about 250 children and teens and they also feed them. However one of their challenges is that they do not have enough food parcels for the children.

Residents are urged donate to the organisation or to volunteer to train the children in sports or any hand-work. Contact Nomakos Mbiko on 078 315 5525 if you can assist.
