Fill up your tanks before 27 July, states social media.

City officials state that they cannot confirm whether or not will there be a national fuel strike on Friday, 27 July.

The Record contacted Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar and Roodepoort Police spokesperson, Juliet Mogale, but neither of them could confirm or deny whether there will be a strike.

However, social media is buzzing about the strike and motorists are urged to fill up their tanks before Friday, 27 July.

According to a statement released by the Automobile Association this week, current data suggests that there is a likelihood of price increases of 19 cents per litre for petrol, 1 cent per litre for diesel and 22 cents for illuminating paraffin.

In May the petrol price increased by 82 cents a litre. The price went up a further 26 cents per litre earlier this month. Diesel and paraffin increased by 85 cents and 82 cents respectively in May and June, and a further 26 cents for diesel and 22 cents for paraffin in July.

The spokesperson of a newly formed organisation, People Against Petrol and Paraffin Price Increases (Pappi), Visvin Reddy, said, “Protest action seems to be the only way to get the government to listen to the concerns of ‘the people’. The rate at which petrol prices are increasing is unacceptable and is having a profound impact on taxpayers.”
