A bird(ie) of a different kind

Golfers were met with a bird(ie) of another kind on the greens recently

Golfers enjoying a Sunday afternoon on the golfing greens were faced with a birdie of a different kind.

According to Mandy Cattanach, the manager of the Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA, they were surprised when they received a call informing them that an adult ostrich was roaming around on the greens at the Eagle Canyon Golf Estate.

“Trainee inspector Anica Pretorius responded to the call, not knowing quite what to expect. Upon her arrival, she spotted the adult ostrich walking happily on the golf greens, while the golfers continued with their game,” Mandy explained.

She added that nobody could give an answer as to exactly how the ostrich ended up there, as the estate is enclosed with electric fencing. “But the estate’s security company suspects that a resident may have sneaked the ostrich into the estate, as a goat and a sheep were also found roaming the grounds earlier the same morning,” she said.

In an attempt to prevent the ostrich being injured by a stray golf ball, or a resident being injured by the ostrich, the unusual visitor was darted and removed to a place of safety.

“Should community members notice a wild animal in a residential area, they must immediately contact the SPCA, to ensure we can take it to a place of safety. People should not try and engage the animal on their own,” Mandy concluded.

The Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp SPCA’s contact number is 011 672 0448.
