National Gibberish Day celebrated by Westrand Toastmasters

Both the theme and word of the day were cause for great mirth amongst the audience

The theme of the recent West Rand Toastmasters meeting was ‘National Gibberish Day’, and, together with the word of the day (nonsensical) it was filled with a lot of laughter.

The meeting was declared open by Sergeant-At-Arms, Ernest Watkins, who called on the Club President, Esther Dreyer to conduct the formalities.

Max Kaan greeted the guests and made them feel welcome, and made a special mention of the six visitors and the two newly acquired members.

Stephanie Greenwood kept everyone entertained with many examples of gibberish, and, although many of the guests laughed a lot, there was a bit of confusion as well, seeing that many of the examples were not that easy to understand.

Alwyn van Wyngaarden was the Table Topics Master for the evening, and kept everyone on their toes with the various topic for the impromptu speeches.

Glen Campbell presented an entertaining speech entitled ‘A Secret Garden’; Stephanie Greenwood gave an interpretive reading entitled ‘A lame calf brought me to Helen’ and the evening was concluded by Alwyn van Wyngaarden’s enlightening speech titled ‘From an Angle’.

The winners for the evening were:

• Stephanie Greenwood, who won the trophy for the Best Contributor

• Richard van Leeuwen, who won the trophy for the Best Impromptu Speech

The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The club’s next meeting will be held on 4 October, at the Discovery Bowling Club, Lucas Avenue, Discovery and will start at 6.30pm.
