Roodepoort soccer tournament was well supported

ESS soccer players learnt valuable lessons at tournament

Players from the Euro Soccer Schools (ESS) Roodepoort participated in a three-day tournament during the recent school holidays. The tournament was organised by the Roodepoort Sports Club, in an attempt to give the children something to do and keep them off the streets.

Teams from ESS, Roodepoort Sports Academy (RSA), Roodepoort United, Silver Lakes FC and Etimar Footbal Foundation competed against each other in three age groups – U/11, U/13 and U/16.

Paolos Ndlovu was committed to not letting a goal through.

The tournament was a group format, where all the teams played against each other, and the top two teams in each age category went on to play in the finals. The tournament kicked off with the the U/11 games.

ESS achieved mixed results with two draws and two losses. The final was played between RSA and Silver Lakes FC, with RSA walking away with a 3–0 victory.

The U/13’s fared a little bit better, recording two wins and a draw, resulting in them taking top spot in the group. They faced off against Silver Lakes, who came back from a 2–0 deficit to draw the game and force it to go into extra time.

Silver Lakes walked away with the victory, after an own goal was scored in the last minute.

The U/16’s were clear favourites as they were top of their group after recording two wins and one loss, seeing them squaring off against Roodepoort United in the final. Unfortunately, ESS lost their second final of the tournament by two second half goals, after an evenly contested first half.

“From my point of view, the boys did not deserve to lose; they were the better team in both matches, especially in the U/13 final where they dominated from kick off. But, they did not convert their chances, and were made to pay for it. However, it is a learning curve, and next time they will be better prepared. It was truly a great achievement to have two out of three teams in the final, and we will definitely work harder to ensure all of our teams qualify for the finals in next year’s tournament,” said Junior Mwale, the ESS coach.
