He highlighted some of the successes. “Three operations conducted on Friday night, 26 October, in Diepsloot, saw three suspects aged between 24 and 30 nabbed for possession of unlicensed firearms. The members were on patrol duties when they spotted a suspicious vehicle. They attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver sped off. A chase ensued and the members managed to stop the vehicle. One suspect got out of the vehicle and tried to flee but the police managed to catch him. Upon searching the suspect, they found a silver revolver loaded with six live rounds in his possession. When asked to produce a licence, he could not comply, and was arrested,” Mathebula explained.

He added that the officers went on to search the vehicle and found a pistol with 18 live rounds hidden between two female occupants, neither of whom could produce a licence for possessing the firearm. Both were arrested.

Another highlight involved the arrest of suspects who stabbed a security guard in Randburg in the early hours of Sunday, 28 October. “Members of the Randburg Police arrested six suspects after they had assaulted and stabbed a security guard in Randburg. One suspect attacked the police with a knife, which resulted in police firing warning shots in order to restrain him. The suspect was shot in the leg and arm and was taken to hospital under police guard,” Mathebula explained.
