Florida learners treated to fun safety facts
The programme was fun, interactive and informative
Learners from the Levleesky Academy recently had the opportunity to learn about pedestrian safety – while having a lot of fun.
Employees from Volvo Trucks visited the school as part of their ‘Stop, Look, Wave’ campaign – a continual safety initiative aimed at young children.
The day’s activities were kicked off with a short video to introduce the children to the campaign, followed by an exercise to gauge the children’s understanding of the concept.
They then had the chance to play with toy Volvo trucks and figurines on roads play mats, which sparked many interesting conversations about their own road experiences.
The day was ended with another fun activity – truck climbing. This activity was done to give them the idea of how high a truck is and the need for them to always ensure they are in a driver’s line of vision. This activity was very enjoyable for the children, and they were very eager to climb on and wave down to their friends.
Valentia Hobbs, the Marketing Director at Volvo Trucks Southern Africa, said, “The campaign was launched in South Africa in 2015, and regained momentum in June this year, with more than 9 300 children reached nationally. Staff members from our truck centres and head office went to local schools in their area where they did the training with the children. We also offer the training materials as a free download on our website, and would like to encourage parents and community leaders alike to help us empower our children and save their lives.”
She added that, as one of the country’s leading vehicle manufacturers, they believe that it is their obligation and privilege to campaign for more awareness around road safety – especially when it comes to children.
