GDE extends learner placement programme
Fast forward to the closing date, when 248 866 learners were placed. Unfortunately, approximately 6 879 learners were unplaced

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has extended its learner placement programme after being unable to secure placements for some learners before reaching its deadline of 31 October.
The Department opened for online applications on 16 April and closed on 28 May. During this period, they received 282 823 applications of which 149 461 were Grade 1 and 133 362 were Grade 8 applications.
Fast forward to the closing date, and 248 866 learners had been placed. Unfortunately, approximately 6 879 learners were unplaced, leaving the proportion of learners placed at 88 per cent.
GDE spokesperson, Steven Mabona, informed the parents to bear with them. “[We] wish to request parents to bear with us, as we must extend our initial deadline to Monday, 5 November,” he said as he confirmed the new date.
He also indicated a newly built school in the Tshwane area was temporarily made available for learners from that area. “In an effort to alleviate pressure, we have decided to use the newly built Centurion Primary School in Tshwane south to temporarily to accommodate all unplaced Grade 8 learners in the Centurion area”.
He also added, “The Department will facilitate necessary consultations with all affected parents. Regular SMS notifications will be sent to parents to update them on developments. To alleviate pressure on the call centre, an email account has been established, namely Admissions.Hotline@gauteng.gov.za, to which parents can direct their enquiries regarding the placement of their children”.
