West Rand Toastmasters heading into the New Year
The West Rand Toastmasters' 454th meeting was held on 1 November, and the theme for the evening was New Year 2019.

The meeting was called to order by Ernest Watkins, the Sergeant-at-Arms, who introduced Esther Dreyer, the Club’s President. She explained the evening’s proceedings, and requested Glen Campbell, the Vice President for Public Relations, to welcome the members and guests.

Among the guests were Toastmaster Abilio Alfeu from Uganda, who talked about his journey to leadership. His speech, entitled ‘The Beginning of My Communication’, explained his concept of leadership as leading from behind rather than in front. He also mentioned Nelson Mandela as his role model.
The table topics role was fulfilled by Alwyn van Wyngaarden. He decided that the topic for the evening would be investment, which included both financial investment or the investment in other areas of our lives. The role of Joke Master was taken on by Lynette Harris.
One of the club’s new members, Jacqui Motaung, was awarded the trophy for the best speech, for her Ice Breaker Speech titled ‘The Music Journey of Jacqui’.
Johannes Grib had the audience rolling with laughter with his speech titled ‘A Man was Not Made To Be Alone’. During the speech, he introduced a bluetooth gadget named Alexia, which answered all his questions and did most of the talking.
The other winners for the evening were:
• Lynette Harris (Best Contributor)
• Max Kaan (Best Impromptu Speech)
• Esther Dreyer (Best Evaluator)
The next meeting, which will also be the last one for the year, will take place on 15 November at the Discovery Bowling Club, Lucas Avenue, Discovery. It will start at 6.30pm.
